Accessibility

Genre Dive is a site about listening, which makes it a strange place to be careless about who can use it. This page says what we are aiming for, what we have done, and — more usefully — what is still wrong.
What we are aiming for
Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 2.1, Level AA. We are not there on every point yet, and the gaps are listed below rather than left for you to find.
What works
- Keyboard navigation throughout, including a skip link to the main content and a mobile menu that opens and closes from the keyboard.
- Landmarks and headings structured so a screen reader can move through a page by section.
- The tracklist expand controls announce whether they are open or closed, and the table headers are marked up so that a screen reader can associate a value with its column.
- Text resizes without breaking the layout.
- Nothing moves or plays on its own. There is no carousel, no auto-advancing content and deliberately no autoplaying audio anywhere on this site. The Mixcloud player loads on episode pages, but sound only ever starts when you press play. Arriving on a page is not a request to hear a two-hour show.
- Motion is reduced where your device asks for that.
What does not work yet
- Some small text does not meet contrast requirements. The eyebrow labels above headings (e.g. the “Episode 011 · Broadcast · Aired May 2026” line and its equivalents) are lighter than AA requires at their size. This is a known fault and it is being fixed.
- The tracklist detail panels are usable by keyboard, but the reading order when a panel opens could be clearer for screen reader users.
- The Genre Explorer, when it launches, will be a visual and spatial tool. We do not yet have a good answer for how it works without sight, and we would rather say so than pretend otherwise. The underlying information, which genres relate to which, and how, is also available as text on episode pages and in the catalogue, which is not a substitute but is at least a route to the same material.
Things outside our control
Episode audio is hosted by Mixcloud and played through their embedded player. We do not control that player’s accessibility. If it presents a barrier, the episode’s tracklist, writeup and links are all on the page as text, and every episode is also available directly on Mixcloud where you may find their own site works better for you.
Tell us
If something here does not work for you, please email admin@genredive.com and say so. Tell us what you were trying to do, what happened, and what you were using: browser, screen reader, magnifier, whatever it was.
